SSP Partners with Mahasarakham University to Prepare Electrical Engineers for the Clean Energy Era with a Site Visit to Uni Power Tech Biomass Power Plant

Sermsang Power Corporation Public Company Limited (SSP) recently welcomed 90 faculty members and students from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Mahasarakham University, for an educational site visit at the Uni Power Tech Biomass Power Plant in Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Held on August 9, 2025, the delegation was led by Dr. Thaweesak Thongsaen and Mr. Banri Khemkladmukt. This initiative aimed to provide students with hands-on learning experiences within an actual operating environment, enhancing their knowledge, understanding, and professional skills beyond the traditional classroom setting.

Uni Power Tech Biomass Power Plant, a subsidiary of SSP, has a net capacity of 9.90 megawatts (MW). The facility officially began Commercial Operation (COD) on May 24, 2019, and operates under a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA).

During the visit, the students attended a corporate presentation providing a comprehensive overview of the power plant’s operations. They learned about the entire biomass power generation process, from fuel intake and processing to grid injection. The facility utilizes a diverse range of biomass fuels, including wood chips, tree bark, veneer wood, and empty palm fruit bunches. These materials are managed within a 4,800-square-meter indoor fuel storage area and an 8,000-square-meter open fuel yard. Additionally, the students toured various sections of the power plant and the testing laboratories, gaining close-up exposure to real-world operational workflows.

The session concluded with career guidance and self-development advice tailored for graduating students to help them prepare for entering the electrical engineering profession. This project successfully enabled students to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical application, while inspiring them and providing a well-rounded understanding of an engineer’s role in the energy industry.
